Builders clean: Professional Limestone cleaning

Professional Limestone cleaning, sometimes even the most diligent builder doesn’t possess the correct skills and equipment to finish and otherwise well installed natural stone floor. We were asked to attend this property in Gloucestershire near Tewkesbury to assess the floor as the owner was unable to maintain it to the degree she would like.

After a closer look we discovered that although the floor had received an application of sealer the stone was not fully repellent thereby making cleaning attempts ineffective. The professional Limestone cleaning process would enable us to fix this.

Once we had fully stripped and cleaned the floor we were able to apply the The correct professional sealer for this type of limestone and re-finish the floor to create the look they only wanted and improving their ability to maintain it themselves.

Don’t give up on your natural stone floor if you are struggling to keep it clean or if it doesn’t look quite as you think it should. In almost all instances we can improve and restore the floor to estate that will enable you to maintain and enjoy it.

Cleaning & polishing Roche Marron Limestone

It’s always a pleasure to work with a high quality natural stone. Artisans of Devizes Roche Marron Limestone is a beautiful natural material that has a partial resemblance to Cotswold stone.

This Roche Marron Limestone floor had had years of family use and was in need of some TLC. The home in a small village on the outskirts of Cheltenham have been very well maintained but the floor had gone beyond what was possible to restore domestically. Standard lost that shine and the grout lines had become very dirty.

Once we’d carefully removed all the old seals and soils from the stone and grout lines, we set about naturally polishing the limestone tiles with diamond abrasives. Making the stone shine naturally stops the need for acrylic varnish styled sealers that prevent the stone from breathing. Naturally polished stone gives a more robust and attractive finish to the stone.

Sealing & polishing flag stones

Sealing & polishing flag stones before and after

Sealing & polishing flag stones before and after

Sealing & polishing flag stones, while the kitchen units were removed from the room we stripped & cleaned the limestone flag stones.

This was a relatively routine stone floor cleaning but will help significantly with the ongoing maintenance of the floor. The final seal & polishing will stop the stone from staining so readily.

A shine can be added to flag stones by agitating & working the stone so that the surface naturally tightens up forming a polish or Belby layer. This is a better finish for natural stone than a synthetic sealer or wax that will spoil & wear out over time.

Each stone and floor is different and so is the approach to their care & maintenance. If you have any questions about caring for your stone floor please get in contact.

French Limestone restoration & sealing

The French limestone tiles were sealed & installed four years ago. As with most kitchen floors the stone has been subjected to food and drinks spills and needed our French Limestone restoration experience. The tiles were beginning to show signs of wear & tear including some acid etching and minor scratches.

After we had removed the remnants of sealer and soils from the natural stone & grout, we then repaired the etching and scratch marks. This was done with several grades of Diamond abrasives. Initial harsher grades repaired the damage to the stone. Following Diamond work polished stone giving a warm natural satin sheen to the Stones surface.

Cotswold limestone Floor Restoration customer review

” Our entrance hall floor was old Cotswold stone flags & grout which had not been treated in any way for many years. It was stained and beginning to flake. Cotswold Stone Floors came promptly, gave good advice on the right treatment, finish and how to look after it in future. It now looks really good and is resilient to all the mud and other stuff which comes on peoples feet into a country cottage. A simple wash over with cold water brings it right back. Cotswold Stone Floors were totally professional and very pleasant to deal with. I would recommend them.”

Carrara marble restoration project

Earlier this year we were asked to carry out some restoration work on the Carrara marble floor of a prestigious building in Stroud, Gloucestershire. The floor was approximately 20 years old and had not received any care over and above mop and bucket.

It had suffered damage increasing  over the years. As the polished surface was compromised the continued footfall worked the damage further into the marble surface causing deep pitting and scratches.

We were asked to bring the marble back to life, whilst retaining some of the character and aged appearance.

After preparing the work area, we began with the most aggressive process to remove the deepest damage to the marble. It was at this stage we had to strike a balance between a complete restoration and preserving some of the character that the client was keen to retain. Once we were happy we had struck the correct balance we moved on through progressively less aggressive stages. Finishing with a final  hone to provide the satin sheen finished requested by our client.

The floor was then sealed using a high-grade impregnating Sealing product that penetrated into the stone surface creating a highly effective water repelling ability to the marble floor tiles.

Where possible we will always achieve the required finish to the stone through natural polishing methods. Then use a impregnating sealing product. This then allows the stone to breath naturally allowing for changes in moisture levels in the sub floor without compromising the stone surface. If a non-breathable synthetic sealer is applied to natural stone. The stone can react to the synthetic surface, shrugging it off and leaving the stone unprotected. The client was very happy with the finish we achieved and has appointed us on other stone restoration projects since.

Sealing Cotswold Limestone

Sealing Cotswold Limestone, all natural stone is porous, but few more than Cotswold Limestone. It can be very difficult to get your properly sealed if it is made from Cotswold stone. Through years of practise & testing we can fully seal a Cotswold stone floor.

A seal doesn’t prevent wear on the stone surface. But it does stop soils & spills seeping into the body of the stone.
